• The Rebecca Rioter - Amy Dillwyn

FIRST published in 1880, this was the first novel of Swansea writer, feminist and pioneer industrialist Amy Dillwyn.

Its backdrop is the Rebecca Riots and the men who dressed up as women to rise up against the imposition of taxes at the toll gates of West Wales.

It tells the tale of Evan Williams, a young working class man, struggling to come to terms with the injustice and social inequalities of the world in which he lives.

His rebellious actions have dramatic consequences not only for himself but, inadvertently, for the woman he loves. Dillwyn deftly satirises the rigid gender roles which existed within the society of her time.
